Major quake in Utah could kill thousands, knock out utilities for extended period
FARMINGTON, Utah (KUTV) — Jerry Vandermeyden can recall vividly the earthquake that woke him in the middle of the night as a 10-year-boy in Bountiful.
“I was sleeping on the top bunk,” he said. “It knocked me out of bed.” He’s worried the next big earthquake will do more than knock people out of bed and FEMA agrees with him.
“If we did have a 7.0 earthquake, we’d have close to 2,000 to 2,500 fatalities, close to 7,000 people would be critically injured,” said Davis County Commissioner Randy Elliott, quoting agency predictions of the worst-case scenario.
